Buckeye is quietly becoming one of Arizona's most active frontiers for clean energy development, and a major new utility scale solar project is set to cement that reputation.

A Virginia-based clean energy developer has applied for a long-term commercial lease on nearly 3,900 acres of state-owned land near Buckeye, with plans to construct a 350-megawatt solar facility featuring a fully integrated solar energy storage system.

The project, known as the Grande Verde Solar Project, would occupy a sweeping stretch of land west of State Route 85, roughly 13 miles south of Interstate 10 — a location well-suited for large-scale energy generation given its open terrain and proximity to transmission infrastructure.

The proposed 30-year commercial lease would require a starting bid exceeding $43 million, reflecting both the scale of the development and the long-term value the state sees in its land holdings.

What makes this project particularly noteworthy is the scope of its planned infrastructure investment.

More than $700 million in site improvements are anticipated, covering new access roads, transmission lines, a dedicated substation, an on-site maintenance facility, and robust battery energy storage systems designed to keep power flowing long after the sun sets.

Taken together, these developments signal a dramatic shift in how the West Valley is positioning itself within Arizona's broader clean energy economy.

Local leaders and energy analysts say the region's flat, sun-drenched landscape and available state trust lands make it a natural magnet for developers racing to meet rising electricity demand.

Arizona's grid is under growing pressure as population growth and extreme heat continue to push power consumption higher each summer.
