One of the West Valley's most consequential road projects is officially off the ground, as I-10 interchange construction at Jackrabbit Trail kicks off a sweeping transformation that Buckeye residents have long been waiting for.

Work zones went up over a recent weekend, signaling the start of a two-year effort to overhaul one of the region's most strained traffic bottlenecks.

For a city that added more than 11,700 residents in just five years and is projected to reach 300,000 people by 2040, the pressure on this stretch of roadway has become undeniable.

The project, a joint effort between state transportation authorities, the Maricopa Association of Governments, and the city of Buckeye, targets one of only six interchanges serving a twelve-mile corridor along I-10 in the West Valley.

Jackrabbit Trail widening sits at the heart of Phase 1, with crews set to expand the roadway to three lanes in each direction between McDowell Road and south of I-10.

Simultaneously, the aging interstate bridge replacement will remove and reconstruct the existing I-10 overpasses above Jackrabbit Trail, a change that engineers say is long overdue given the corridor's explosive growth.

Interchange ramps will also be widened to add turning lanes, and updated traffic signals will be installed throughout the reconstructed interchange.

The early weeks of work are expected to cause limited disruption, with most initial activity concentrated near the flood-control channel west of Jackrabbit Trail.

Drivers should prepare for more significant disruptions as construction matures, including ramp closures lasting roughly 45 days and a temporary shutdown of a section of Jackrabbit Trail for approximately 20 days.

When closures occur, officials point to the I-10 interchanges at Verrado Way and Perryville Road as reliable alternate routes.

The total price tag for Phase 1 sits at approximately $176 million, drawing from a budget that covers construction, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation, and design costs.

Funding flows largely through Proposition 479, the dedicated half-cent transportation sales tax that Maricopa County voters approved in 2024 under the Regional Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan.

That voter mandate is now beginning to take physical shape along one of the region's busiest corridors.

Phase 1 construction extends from south of McDowell Road to north of Roosevelt Street and is expected to run through 2028.

Phase 2, which will push Jackrabbit Trail widening further south toward Van Buren Street, is being programmed for funding and is expected to begin once Phase 1 wraps up.

Together, the two phases will deliver a fully expanded Jackrabbit Trail corridor stretching from McDowell Road to Van Buren Street, a move that local leaders say will redefine daily commuting for thousands of West Valley families.

Buckeye is simultaneously attracting large-scale commercial and industrial investment, making the case for upgraded infrastructure even more urgent as data centers, manufacturing facilities, and master-planned communities continue to take root across the city.

City officials have framed the interchange project not merely as a road upgrade, but as a foundational investment in Buckeye's ability to absorb growth responsibly and keep its residents moving.
